Helsby's
promotion chances were all but ended when a poor second half display condemned
them to a heavy defeat. Playing into a strong wind in the first half Helsby
were always under pressure against a strong West park side, and Helsby's
only points came when John Williams went on a rampaging run crashing through
three tackles to score in the corner. Trailing 19-8 at half time the game
was still their for Helsby to use the conditions and take the game to
the hosts but an early West Park try rocked Helsby and killed off any
chance of a fightback. Helsby did manage to score a second try score when
Lee Gibson crashed over following a good Helsby move but it proved to
be just consolation on a disappointing afternoon. Helsby's Frodsham Tandoori
m.o.m. was Tom Gregory for his tireless effort throughout the game.

Helsby were
knocked out of the Cheshire plate, but gave a creditable performance against
a team three leagues above them. The home side had a poor start when Northwich
scored out wide in the opening minutes of the game, but that seemed to
wake Helsby up and in a tight first half both defences were on top. Half-time
0-5.
Helsby applied the pressure to the visitors defence and were unlucky not
to score on a couple of occasions, but they made to pay when Northwich
scored a breakaway try to increase their lead. The visitors crossed again
shortly after but Helsby gave themselves hope when a good pass by Merrill
freed John Williams who had the strength to hold off two defenders to
score Helsby's first try, Rowlinson converting. Helsby could not cross
the line again though and Nortwich held on for the victory.

Helsby had
a good victory at the weekend when they defeated a young Wirral side, after
their league match against Linley was called off by the opposition.

tries from John Williams(2),Felix Jones,Mark Wakefield and scrum half
Lee Thomas, who scored his first try for the club, all converted by Rowlinson
allowed Helsby to turn around at half time 35-7 in front. Wirral made
a much better fight of the game in the second half and were rewarded with
an early try,but with Rowlinson scoring and Williams completing his hat
trick Helsby ran out comfortable winners. Helsby's Frodsham tandoori m.o.m

Helsby earned
a tough victory in terrible conditions in this quarter final of the Wirral
Floodlit Cup. Playing into a strong wind and driving rain, Helsby found
the going tough, but an exceptional defensive display thwarted any Port
Sunlight attacks, and just before half time they took the lead when good
hands across the line fed wing Jon Stubbs, who went on a strong run beating
two tacklers on his way to the try line,Rowlinson converting. Helsby controlled
the second half better with Jim Gray and Tom Gregory both having strong
games, and Helsby secured the win when John Williams intercepted a stray
pass and raced 40 yards to score under the posts,Rowlinson again converting.
Helsby's Frodsham tandoori m.o.m Tony Mckibbon for his excellent defensive

Helsby moved
into second place in the league following a comfortable victory at the
weekend. A strong start by the hosts saw them take the lead in the opening
minutes, when good hands across the line saw wing Alex Rutter collect the
ball and outpace his opposite number to score in the corner.Port Sunlight
responded with a penalty, but this was shortly cancelled out when Rowlinson
kicked a penalty and Helsby increased their lead, when Felix Jones recieved
the ball and went on a weaving 40 yard run to score a fine solo try,Rowlinson
converting. Half time Helsby 15 Port Sunlight 3.
An early Rowlinson penalty kept Helsby in control of the game, however
a similar effort from the visitors gave them hope, but it was Helsby who
scored another try when Jon Stubbs collected a kick on the half way line,
broke through the visitors defence and had enough pace to make it to the
try line.Port Sunlight did manage to cross the Helsby line late on but
debutant Tony Ayres capped an excellent victory for Helsby, when he used
his strength to hold off three defenders and power his way over for a
good try. Helsby's Frodsham Tandoori m.o.m. Jon Stubbs for his strong
running.

Helsby made
the long journey to Southport at the weekend and came away with a excellent
victory over strong opposition. An early Rowlinson penalty got Helsby
on the scoresheet, but the home side hit back with a converted try. Helsby
regained the lead when following good hands across the back lane, wing
Alex Rutter received the ball in space and had enough speed to round his
opposite man and cross in the corner, Rowlinson converting. The visitors
increased their lead when good pressure by Merrill forced an error by
the St.Mary's full back and Felix Jones collected the loose ball, and raced
40 yards to score under the posts,Rowlinson converting. Half time St.Marys
7 Helsby 17. The home side applied a lot of pressure to the Helsby line
at the start of the second half but excellent defence restricted them
to just a penalty which was shortly cancelled out by a Rowlinson penalty,
but a try out near the corner did give them hope but a further Rowlinson
penalty gave Helsby the breathing space and the home side could not break
through Helsby's well organised defence. Helsby's Frodsham Tandoori Jim
Gray for his excellent work at the base of the scrum.

over the line - Dave Orme converting. The visitors came back stronger
in the second half, however, scoring two quick tries - but Helsby hit
back with late tries from second row Tony McKibbin and a superb pushover
try from number eight, Steve Goodfellow, again converted by Orme. The

Helsby got
back to winning ways with another hard fought victory over Congleton at
the weekend. A number of forced changes saw Helsby struggle to make any
impact against an organised Congleton defence, and it the was the visitors
who opened the scoring, when good hands across the line allowed their winger
to cross in the corner.Helsby responded shortly after with a good try
in which stand off Paul Healey fed centre John Stubbs who broke through
the oncoming defence ,and went on a 30 metre run beating the Congleton
full back on the way to score near the posts,Rowlinson converting. Half
time Helsby 7 Congleton 5. The second half was a tight affair with both
defences on top and the only points of the half was from a Rowlinson penalty
which gave Helsby a little bit of breathing space, but despite some strong
running from Wakefield and Jones,Helsby were unable to add to their total
and hung on for a deserved victory. Helsby's Frodsham Tandoori m.o.m.

scrum-half Lee Thomas put Helsby further ahead after Bruce Rigby and Tom
Gregory made the opening for him - Tim Rutter again converting. The second
half saw a tighter contest but Helsby remained strong and late pressure
was rewarded when prop Phil Riley crashed over for a try in the corner
following a tap penalty which was awarded after Oldfield had been taken
out by a high tackle ten yards from the line. Man of the match for Helsby

Helsby reched
the quarter finals of the Cheshire plate with a thrilling victory over
local rivals Moore at the weekend. The home side started strongly and
opened their account with a Rowlinson penalty, the lead was increased when
debutant Ste Ayres scored after he chipped over the visitors defence and
won the race for the touchdown,Rowlinson converting.Shortly after it was
Ayres who crossed again following a strong, weaving run in which he beat
three would be tacklers before scoring under the posts,Rowlinson again
converting.Moore hit back with a good converted try following quick hands
from their backs, quickly followed by a penalty.Helsby took advantage of
a Moore mistake when Felix Jones collected a dropped ball and raced 70
yards to extend Helsby's lead again, but right on the stroke of half time
a second Moore try made the half time score Helsby 24 Moore 15. The visitors
had the advantage of the wind in the second half and an early penalty
reduced Helsby's lead, the home side then conceded another try to bring
them only two points behind. With the pressure firmly on Helsby Moore tried
to force the game but Ashley Wakefield intercepted a stray pass and had
the pace to race 90 yards to score for Helsby,Moore got themselves back
in the game once again with a try following a mistake by Helsby and they
took the lead for the first time in the game when they crossed again following
a good move from a scrum. With two minutes left,Helsby had a scrum in an
attacking position and number 8 Jim Gray collected the ball from the back
of the scrum and split the Moore defence with a perfect pass to Andy Rowlinson
who raced in from 20 yards, the conversion sealing an excellent victory
for the hosts. Helsby's Frodsham tandoori m.o.m. Ashley Wakefield for

Helsby lost
their first league game in two months, when a controversial last gasp
penalty cost them a victory which would have kept them at the top of the
league.
On a very heavy pitch and with strong winds blowing, neither team managed
to sustain any pressure on the other and the only score of the first half
was an Andy Rowlinson penalty which gave Helsby a slender lead. The second
half was again played in bad conditions but it was the visitors who broke
the stalemate when good hands freed winger Rich Albel who used his speed
and power to score in the corner,Helsby allowed the home side back into
the game when an error gifted a try to give Holmes Chapel hope.Helsby
appeared to be holding on for victory but deep into injury time the referee
awarded the home side a penalty right in front of the posts which was
duly converted and coincidentally Helsby didnt even have chance to restart
as the full time whistle was then blown to condemn to a disappointing
loss. Helsby's Frodsham Tandoori M.O.M. was Andy Rowlinson.

Helsby didn't have it all their own way and had to rely on some solid
tackling to stem the pressure from the visitors who at times threatened
to cross the Helsby line. The home side stood firm, however, and went
on to record their second highest victory of the season.

Helsby go
into the christmas break joint top of the league after another last gasp
victory at the weekend. A sluggish start to the game saw the visitors
score an early converted try, which was shortly followed by a penalty.
A combination of bad decisions and some bad handling didint help Helsby
who struggled to gain good field position against an organised police
defence. Things went from bad to worse for Helsby, when the visitors scored
again on the stroke of half time to give them a commanding 15-0 lead at
the break. After the break, an early Andy Rowlinson penalty opened Helsby's
account for the afternoon, although this was shortly cancelled out by a
penalty from the visitors. With only 15 minutes left Helsby were given
a lifeline when Rowlinson intercepted a loose pass and raced 80 yards
to score and also convert his own try.The gap was reduced to a point when
following good work by Gray and Merrill,John Williams used his strength
to hold off three tacklers and crash over near the posts,Rowlinson again
converting. With just two minutes remaining Helsby kept the ball alive
and it was spun out wide where full back Paul Ryder had joined the line,he
broke the first tackle and dummied the oncoming defence to score in the
corner and sealed an unlikely victory for the home side. Helsby's Frodsham

home side scored a second try when they used their advantage in the scrum
to score a pushover try,not deterred Helsby got themselves back in the
game when Jimmy Walker went over for a try following a quick tap penalty
move,J.Williams converting.Winnington Park again used their advantage
up front to score close to half time to make the score 21-7.
A stirring team talk seemed to do the trick for Helsby when within two
minutes of the restart Williams powered through to score, with the same
player converting.Helsby brought themselves right back into the game when
wing Chris Mckean crossed following good hands along the back line, shortly
after the visitors took the lead for the first time when Williams worked
a clever switch move with Bob Merrill to score his second touchdown. The
best was yet to come as Helsby's backs worked an excellent play to put
centre Mark Wakefield through a gap to cross with Williams again converting.Winnington
did score near the end but it proved to be mere consolation against a
very commited Helsby side. Frodsham Tandoori M.O.M. stand off Merrill

John Williams broke through the Holmes Chapel defence and had enough pace
to make it to the try line to reduce the deficit to only two points. With
