Helsby 2nd XV 5 - 8 Port Sunlight 2nd XV

T: M Lamb

Helsby seconds were desparately unlucky not to get a win from this game, but after dominating for long periods they could not turn the pressure into points. Sunlight took an early lead with an unconverted try, but the remainder of the first half remained deadlocked. After the re-start, Helsby were rewarded for their efforts when centres Steve Turnbull and Steve Eyres combined to send winger Mike Lamb on a forty yard sprint into the corner for his first try for the club. Helsby came close to taking the lead when speedy winger, Kev Ryder raced over fifty yards only to be tackled short of the line. Sunlight made the victory safe with a late penalty though the result didn't do justice to an outstanding performance by the Helsby pack for whom Tom Gregory was outstanding in the line-out. Frodsham Tandoori man of the match was Chris Goodfellow for his strong running in attack.

Helsby 21 - 20 Mossley Hill

T: J Williams, A Rutter, Rowlinson
G : Rowlinson(3)

Helsby got back to winning ways with a narrow victory over Mossley Hill. Playing against a strong wind, Helsby struggled to get into an attacking position and it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a penalty. The home side were unlucky not to score when Alex Rutter was harshly adjudged to have been held up over the line and Mossley Hill made them pay when they scored a converted try to make the half-time score 0-10. A poor start by Helsby allowed the visitors to increase their lead to 0-15 before a strong John Williams run resulted in him crossing under the posts, Andy Rowlinson converting. Helsby then closed the gap to just a point when following good play by their pack, winger Rutter was freed and used his pace to race in under the posts - Rowlinson again converting. With time running out Helsby turned a Mossley Hill ball over and the ball was fed to Andy Rowlinson who chipped over the oncoming defence, regathered and scored for the match winning try. The Liverpool side scored a late try to reduce the deficit to a single point, but the Helsby defence stood firm to secure the victory. Frodsham Tandorri Man of the Match for Helsby was prop Al Garner for his tireless work-rate. The win moves Helsby up to fourth in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Four - they continue their league campaign this Saturday at Port Sunlight.

Helsby 2nd XV 68 - 28 Linley & Kidsgrove 2nd XV

T: Eyres(3), J Williams(2), G Lilley(2), K Ryder, Oldfield, T Rutter
G : T Rutter(9)

An excellent all round team effort saw Helsby seconds complete one of their biggest wins for years, Tony Eyres starting the scoring with the first try before John Williams and Gordon Lilley each grabbed two tries apiece. Linley hit back with a couple of tries of their own before the break, but after the re-start it was all Helsby. Firstly, debutant winger, Kev Ryder scored in the corner from fully sixty yards out. Next up came Williams, who burst through the Linley defence from thirty yards before off-loading for Martyn Oldfield to finish beneath the posts. Then it was full back, Tim Rutter's turn when he finished a John Buckley break in the corner. Eyres completed his hat-trick and wrapped up a fantastic performance from Helsby with two late tries, whilst Rutter can look back on a great day with the boot, converting nine out of ten attempts. Credit must also be given to Helsby for their tireless defence, with some try-saving tackles by Buckley. Man of the Match for Helsby was Mark Webb.
